FAQS about Adopt a Non-Formal School
Q. What is a Non-Formal school?
A. Non-Formal schools operated by the Literacy & Non-Formal Basic Education Department, Government of the Punjab consist of multi-grade, single-teacher, one-room schools for out-of-school children. At present, certificate-based programs are offered at Non-formal schools till the primary level (class 5). Currently, the department is operating 13,519 schools with an enrollment of around 450,000 students. The average number of students at a school is 33.
Q. Why adopt a school?
A. Children enrolled at Non-Formal schools constitute the most marginalized segments of society such as slum dwellers, internally displaced persons, brick kiln workers, nomads, gipsies etc. The majority of the learners consist of females (56%). These kids do not enjoy access to formal education opportunities due to a variety of reasons and cannot even afford the most basic items such as school bags, colour pencils, notebooks & face masks etc. While the department is ensuring payment of honorarium to teachers and provision of textbooks to students etc., your support to these deserving children can make a world of difference in improving the learning environment at Non-Formal Schools.
Q. What are the steps involved in school adoption?
- Interested parties can contact the concerned DEO Literacy (District Education Officer; government servant) of their district for signing the adoption agreement.
As the school has to be specified in the adoption agreement, the preference of the donor would be taken. If he doesn’t specify any particular school, District Education Officer (Literacy) can share particulars of any three schools with him (location, class strength etc.) and the school to be adopted can be finalized accordingly.
The Adoption Agreement would be signed and a copy would be dispatched to the Director of Operations at the headquarters. The donor would be requested to provide the minimum required items within 10-15 days. (link)
