Mardan is the capital of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. Its population increased dramatically in the second half of the twentieth century. It has been a thriving trade and commercial centre in recent years. According to the 2017 census, the district covers an area of 1632 square kilometres and has a population of 3, 997, 667 people. It shares boundaries with the districts of Nowshera, Charsadda, Malakand, and Swabi. It is the gateway to Peshawar, Malakand, and Islamabad, being centrally located 141.7 kilometres (km) from Islamabad and 65 kilometres (km) from the KP capital Peshawar. Pashto is the district’s primary language. Prior to the partition, it was elevated to the status of a full-fledged district.

The Peshawar High Court established Mardan as a Sessions Division in 1972. It currently has two Tehsils (sub-divisions): Takht Bhai and Katlang. The following courts are located at the District Headquarter in Mardan: 01 District & Sessions Judge, 08 Additional District & Sessions Judges, 03 Senior Civil Judges, and 15 Civil Judges/Judicial Magistrates; 02 Additional District & Sessions Judge and 03 Civil Judges/Judicial Magistrates; and, at Katlang, 01 Additional District and Sessions Judge and 02 Civil Judges/Judicial Magistrates.
Mardan has three National Assembly seats, eight Provincial Assembly seats, 64 Union Councils, seventeen police stations, and fifty-two patwar circles.
